Former Carlisle United star Liam McCarron was handed the chance to impress Marcelo Bielsa in Leeds United's first team last night.

It was a step up to Bielsa's senior side for the Appleby prospect.

McCarron, 20, came on at left-back for the final 22 minutes of the Whites' pre-season friendly against Ajax.

It came as Bielsa's Premier League side went down to a 4-0 defeat in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Scotland Under-21 man McCarron joined first-team stars like Illan Meslier, Pascal Struijk, Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and Robin Koch in the team for the game's closing stages.

The ex-Blues prospect is hoping to push his way closer to contention at Elland Road in what will be his third season at the club.

The pacy left-sided player joined Leeds in the summer of 2019 after breaking into the Blues side as a 17-year-old.

He made 20 appearances for the Cumbrians in the 2018/19 season and quickly attracted the attention of bigger clubs.

Since his move to Leeds, along with another Blues prospect in Josh Galloway, McCarron has regularly featured for the club's Under-23s side.

His last outing in first-team football remains his final United appearance, against Newport in March 2019, but McCarron's development at Leeds has now earned him an opportunity under legendary head coach Bielsa.

McCarron also featured for a Leeds XI with a 45-minute display in an earlier game against an Ajax side at De Toekomst Arena.
