Former Carlisle United prospect Liam Lightfoot has agreed to join Workington Reds ahead of the new campaign.

The 19-year-old has registered as a non-contract player with the Borough Park club.

Lightfoot has been training with Reds this summer following his release by the Blues.

He has featured in pre-season friendlies for the west Cumbrian club and now joins under new manager Chris Willcock.

Lightfoot, from Abbeytown, joins younger brother Carl, 17, on Reds' books, the latter part of the club's development squad and who has played for the first team.

The versatile player, who can operate in defence and midfield, came through the ranks at Carlisle United and earned a professional contract in the summer of 2020.

But, along with a number of other young pros, opportunities were limited last season, while a loan move to Kendal Town was curtailed because of Covid-19's impact on the non-league game.

Lightfoot is the latest of the released young pros to get fixed up with another club after Charlie Barnes and Charlie Birch joined Annan Athletic recently. United also released Jamie Armstrong and Tom Wilson at the end of last season.

Reds host Morpeth in a friendly this weekend before getting their Northern Premier League West season under way against Kidsgrove on August 14.
