Cumbrian Nick Miller finished sixth in the final of the men's hammer in the Olympics.

The Scotby star produced a season's best throw of 78.15m in Tokyo.

It was not enough to put Miller in medal contention, as Poland's Wojciech Nowicki claimed gold with a throw of 82.52m, with Norway's Eivind Henriksen (81.58m) and Poland's Pawel Hajdek (81.53) getting silver and bronze respectively.

Commonwealth champion Miller's performance, though, attracted praise from BBC commentator Steve Cram.

He said: "There won't be many Team GB athletes in these games finishing in the top six.

"In that last round you thought maybe he could get amongst it, but it would have required something huge.

"But top six is a very good performance."

Miller briefly led the final after his first throw of 77.88m but was soon overtaken by the powerful Nowicki.

It would have taken a personal best to force his way into late medal contention but it was not to be despite an improved final throw.

Miller, 28 - the British record holder - has been competing in his second Olympics and his result in Tokyo is a step forward from his performance in Rio 2016.

His family have been flying the flag in Carlisle in support of his bid for success in Tokyo.
