Cumbria County Council have released another statement following the landslip at Parton on Wednesday 28th July.

The landslip occurred on a bank above St Bridget's Primary School after a very dry spell followed by heavy rain.

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council said: "We strongly advise people to avoid the affected area and not return to homes if they've been evacuated.

"Evacuated residents have been able to return to their homes briefly, accompanied by the emergency services, to collect essential belongings."

So far, vegetation has been cleared from the slope using automated mowers, so that the full extent of the slippages can be seen more clearly and assessed by drones.

Specialist engineers are now checking for any further movement of the land, and additional monitoring equipment has been installed.

Homes will remain evacuated until further notice and road blocks will remain in place.

Although the road closure has been put in place for an 18 month period which is standard procedure it is not yet known how long it will last.

It is thought that children will be able to start attending school in September again as planned.

A spokesperson said: "Assuming that pupils cannot return to school in September, current thinking is that a short, one-to-two-week period of remote learning.

"A longer-term solution could involve moving pupils to an existing alternative local school site or setting up a new site using temporary buildings - this detail is still being worked through."

There is support in place for people who have had to be evacuated including alternative housing and financial help.

There is also contact information available on the website to help with people's mental wellbeing through this time.

Regular updates will be posted on the Council's Facebook and Twitter account.
