Newly-promoted Hartlepool United have added a second former Carlisle United striker to their squad ahead of the new season.

Mark Cullen, who was on loan with the Blues in the 2018/19 campaign, has signed for the Monkey Hangers after a trial spell.

He joins fellow ex-United man Olufela Olomola at the Victoria Park club, who face Carlisle twice in the first month of 2021/22.

Cullen was previously with Port Vale before being released in the summer.

Pools boss Dave Challinor said the 29-year-old was "an experienced forward, a finisher - if you get him in the right areas he will be a great asset to the team."

Pools said Cullen is currently recovering from an injury sustained in a pre-season game against Spennymoor.

The Ashington-born striker himself told the Pools website: "I know the Pools fans are passionate, I know they get right behind the team so it is an exciting move for me and I can’t wait to get properly started.

"I have obviously been around the squad for a good few weeks now. They are a great set of lads and everyone is eager and hungry for the new season."

Cullen made nine Carlisle appearances without scoring in an injury-hit loan spell from Blackpool under Steven Pressley in 2019.

He then returned to haunt the Blues by heading a late Port Vale winner in United's 2-1 defeat at Vale Park that November.

United face Pools - who also include another ex-Blue in Gary Liddle - in the league at Victoria Park on August 28, before a Brunton Park clash in the Papa John's Trophy three days later.
