A Carlisle man, who rescued a lorry driver from his crashed vehicle, has reached the final 10 selection stage in the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2021 Act Of Courage category.

Antony Scott, 31, of Coledale Meadows, pulled away the glass of the cab and kept the trapped and injured driver Stuart Shaw talking and awake until the emergency crews arrived after the lorry had collided with a car on the M6 near Junction 27.

Mr Scott said: "I'm absolutely over the moon it is the first time that I've been nominated for anything I don't know what to say.

"I can't believe that people have went out and nominated me."

Anthony, who is an Amazon delivery driver, had swerved to void the crash but his first thought was to check on the driver of the car and lorry.

After noticing a deep wound on Mr Shaw's head he held a towel against it until it was treated by paramedics.

Police later officially thanked Antony for his bravery.

In their message to Mr Scott, North West Motorway Police wrote: "Helping the driver in the way that you did at the scene we are sure has played a massive impact on the driver still being alive."

Antony reached the Act Of Courage selection stage out of 300 nominations overall chosen by the public.

The other categories are Against All Odds, Active Agers, Charity Champion, Coronavirus Hero, Young Hero, Hero Pet and Celebrity Hero.

Four finalists will be selected in each category and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 5th.

Mr Scott said: "After everything that people, including myself, have been through over the past year it would be absolutely amazing to win."

Stuart Shaw went onto make a recovery and his grateful family have made contact with Antony.

They have plans to meet.
