With the Olympics now underway over in Tokyo, many Cumbrians will already be enjoying the chance to cheer on competitors from our region and further afield in their quest for medals.

In today's gallery, we are looking back at times when victors were met with rapturous receptions in our regions following their sporting heroics at previous games.

We thought it would be fitting to look at not only Olympic heroes who you may have heard of but also those unsung names from our region who have made great contributions from helping to put the games together to training some of our country's most celebrated stars.

In a very inspirational gallery we meet GB Olympic swimming coach Bill Furniss who coached Rebecca Adlington, who visited the Park Leisure Centre to coach 68 swimmers from Ulverston, Barrow, Troutbeck Bridge, Kendal and Carlisle Amateur Swimming Clubs back in 2012.

And who can forget Jack Stalker from Carlisle who worked at the Olympics in 2012?

We also look at heartwarming scenes such as Olympic rower Matt Wells visiting Trinity School in Carlisle. Matt showing some of the pupils his medals in 2016.

We also see Olympic long jumper Chris Tomlinson during a visit Upperby Primary School in Carlisle to take children on a long jump and triple jump workshop.

And then there's Double Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Philip Hinds, who visited Austin Friars School in Carlisle after his success in the Rio Olympics.

Many Cumbrians will have also appreciated the visits of the likes of Etienne Stott, one of Team GB Olympic Gold Medal Champions who visited Carlisle Mail Centre in 2012

In another scene, we meet Olympic Gold medalist Steve Cram, who is seen drawing tickets for a raffle on his visit to Brunton Park.

For many of the people who were present at these various events, these images will undoubtedly bring back happy memories of brushes with sporting royalty as well as unsung Olympic heroes.
