EMERGENCY services across the county have warned people about entering the open water over the weekend after a number of tragic incidents involving drowning in the past week.

The weekend is set to be another scorcher with temperatures predicted to reach as high as 26 degrees in the area.

Crews from Carlisle East Fire Station went down to the River Eden on Thursday to create a video advising people what to do when going into the water

A firefighter from the station said: "What we stress is that non-swimmers never go above your knees"

They advised anyone who felt as if they were getting into trouble to lie back and form a star shape to allow the body to float.

In the video they said: "When you're in a star shape like that, the oxygen in your lungs or in your clothing will help you float.

"If you do decide that you feel uncomfortable that way and you can swim, you can make your way out doing whatever stroke you are most comfortable with."

The North West Ambulance Service have also issued warning for anyone thinking about going swimming in the open water this weekend.

In a post on their Facebook, they said: "Cold, open water might be very tempting this time of year and especially in this heatwave, but you are putting your life at risk"

Whitehaven Coast Guard also warned people against the dangers of going out in the water over the weekend.

They posted: "There has been a variety of coastal and inland water incidents throughout Cumbria over the past week alone, some with very tragic and sad news. Our thoughts are very much with the families and the rescue personnel involved in each of these.

"With people staycationing, we expect the coast will see a larger than normal number of visitors over the coming weeks, some possibly visiting and choosing to stay in the many coastal holiday parks and accommodation along the Cumbrian coast. "

"The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim to safety and strong currents can quickly sweep you away. If you do get into difficulty in the water, remember float to live."
