A CARLISLE man 'bounced' his pal and lodger down stairs having pulled him out of bed while seeking to evict him.‬

‪Sixty-year-old Nigel David Colvin allowed friend Alistair Bradshaw to stay with him for a short time as he saved up a deposit for his own property.

Mr Bradshaw was described as being “dependant on alcohol”, the city’s crown court was told.

On July 8 last year, the pair drank together at the address throughout the day.

“The defendant decided to eject the complainant from the house because the complainant was drunk,” said prosecutor Claire Brocklebank.

“The complainant was in bed. The defendant dragged him out bed, pulled him down the stairs and physically ejected him through the front door.

“It is difficult to pinpoint precisely the injuries caused due to the complainant’s medical history. Photographs show a cut to the nose, grazes to the arm and scratches to his back.”

‬Colvin, of Ennerdale Avenue, Carlisle, then kicked a police officer as he was transported to custody.

He admitted assaulting both Mr Bradshaw, causing actual bodily harm, and an emergency worker in the execution of his duty.‬

‪Mark Shepherd, defending, suggested in his address to Judge Paul Lawton that a community order would be the most appropriate punishment for Colvin, who was prepared to complete community service.‬

‪“He would only be able to perform light duties due to a fracture to his ankle,” said Mr Shepherd. “He has worked throughout his adult life until relatively recently.”‬

‪Judge Lawton agreed, saying charity shop work or similar would be available.‬

‪He imposed a 12-month community order, 100 hours’ unpaid work and ordered Colvin to complete an alcohol treatment requirement.‬

‪”The way you treated him was despicable. He was vulnerable because he was in bed asleep,” the judge said of Mr Bradshaw, observing that he was “bounced” down stairs. “It came as a complete surprise and shock to him.”‬

‪Judge Lawton also stated: “You are 60 years of age. I don’t know why you are — or you were — spending your days binge-drinking vodka. I hope that’s stopped.”‬
