News and Star readers are still uncertain whether a Christmas event will go ahead in Workington.

This is after the local council announced that they have plans to return their festivities this winter.

The council are hoping that they will be able to have an event for the Christmas lights switch on along with a 'Winter Wonderland' festival.

Shirley Wood said: "I very much doubt it will happen, as everything else is cancelled."

David Mcnay said: "I think it won't be happening the Fire Show in Carlisle is a pointer, I'd suggest.

"Sadly, I reckon more and more events will be knocked on the head for a second year."

Shaun Patrick Watson said: "I should say it will be back everywhere once Covid passes are here."

Some people are remaining optimistic that celebrations will go ahead this year.

Nic Barnes said: "The kids will be excited."

Despite some scepticism this will be welcome news for many other people, especially families.

As children were left disappointed last year when a lot of activities including Christmas events had to be postponed.

As restrictions have eased across England over the past week it seems that people may be able to start to look ahead and enjoy a gradual return to normality.

The Mayor of Workington, Herbert Briggs, said that he thought the idea was brilliant.

Mayor Briggs emphasised how the likes of Christmas celebrations bring a sense of normality.
