With the Olympics getting underway, sports fans across Cumbria will be looking forward to watching some of the world's greatest athletes vying for glory.

Back in 2012, the spirit of the games were well and truly brought to our streets as the world famous Olympic Torch was paraded through the long and winding roads of North Cumbria courtesy of some of our region's leading figures.

In today's gallery, we see an incredible set of images depicting the unique experience for so many of us of a home games.

Even though London played host to the vast majority of events, there is no doubt that communities up and down the country very much felt part of the action with the Olympic Torch relay playing a massive role in that sense of togetherness.

In today's set of images we see the heroic Gary McKee playing torch bearer as the torch came onto Scotch Street before heading to Lloyds TSB on Lowther Street in Whitehaven.

We see evidence of a real carnival spirit in images such as that depicting people starting to gather on New Road as they wait for the Olympic Torch to arrive in Whitehaven.

In the east of the county, we meet Sheila Gregory, chief executive of Mencap in Carlisle, who is pictured one year on from taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay in 2012, relaxing at the Grace Little Centre at Kingstown in the city.

Alongside Sheila Gregory, we also have Lauren Hardon, 16, from Ainstable, who carried the Olympic Torch through Wigton, as the torch made its way through Cumbria June 2012.

We also see the fantastic scene of Richard Beaty carrying the torch along Warwick Road, Carlisle in June 2012.

And, of course the News & Star also got in on the action with our photographers from the time taking the unique opportunity to get a picture with the flame.

It was such a momentous time in the sporting history of the country that many of us will certainly not have forgotten the great summer that was 2012, when the Olympics landed on our streets!
