A baby alpaca has been born at a local campsite – to the delight of campers and visitors.
The owners of Shepherd’s View Campsite at Drigg recently bought three alpacas but did not know that one of them was pregnant.
The baby has been named Sunday, for the day on which it was born.
Andy West, a seasonal pitch holder at the campsite, said: “It was a very nice surprise with everything that’s going on. It’s not something that you see every day and it’s nice how it has turned out.”
Campers and passers by have commented on how special it is that the campsite now has a baby alpaca. The children in particular are so excited to see such a rare sight in the Lakes.
Julie Shepherd, who owns the campsite with her husband, told us how happy she is about Sunday's arrival.
"It was such a shock we had no idea that Sunday's mother was pregnant so we're really pleased with what's happened."
Julie and her husband were alerted to what was going on by one of the campers and when they went down to the field to check, Sunday had already arrived.
They had bought the original three from The Wooly Farm Alpaca Trekking centre near Wastwater and plan to keep the four alpacas as pets.
