News and Star readers had their say about a petition to protect exotic birds that have found a home in a Cumbrian town.

The campaign will aim to save a group of peacocks that are regularly seen around housing estates in Maryport.

Residents voiced their support for keeping the intriguing animals a part of the area.

Dean Andrew Bell said: "Leave them be they're an amazing sight to see walking round our little area."

"We came home one day and they were all in our garden the kids loved it."

Clare Haycock said: "They are often in our garden and I have never found them to be a nuisance."

"I've seen them wandering on the roofs of houses on Ullswater Road."

"I think they should stay as they are something unique about the Maryport and Ewanrigg area."

Deborah Blair said: "They are lovely to see and the kids love them on the way to school."

"I think people need to find something else to complain about."

This comes after a petition was sent to Allerdale Borough Council by Emma Kelt of Forever Friends Small Animal Rescue Sanctuary.

Some residents had been complaining to the council about the peacocks being in Maryport.

But so far the petition has gained over 800 signatures and many people from the area seem to want to keep the birds there.

It is thought that the birds were introduced to the town by Michael Mitchell who ran the Ellen Bank Hotel.

Councillor Peter Little has acknowledged the public support .
