A HGV driver died on the motorway following a medical incident this morning.

The M6 exit at the southbound Southwaite Services near Carlisle was closed after a report of an incident.

A Cumbria Police spokesman has now confirmed a man was found dead.

He said: “Police were contacted at 07:56am today (Monday, July 12), by Highways England, due to concerns for the welfare of a HGV driver, on the grass verge of the M6 slip road, to the Southwaite Services.

"Emergency services attended, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A file has been passed to the coroner.

"The slip road was closed whilst emergency services attend the scene, but has since reopened."
