Extra help has been on hand to help clean up Hammonds Pond in Carlisle, just weeks after a huge cash boost has been given for improvements.

The popular park has been enjoyed for generations but has had its fair share of problems in the last few months.

But on Tuesday, police and members of staff from Riverside housing took part in a litter pick helping to clean up the area.

Officers and volunteers managed to fill several bags of rubbish after they had signed up as litter champions with Carlisle City Council.

Cumbria police are proud that their officers are playing an active role in their communities.

A spokesman said: “It’s another example of how our officers and staff help in our communities.”

Riverside’s housing officers Emma Davidson and Karen Boak are members of the Friends of Hammonds Group and took part in the litter pick with police.

Emma, housing officer for Upperby and Currock, said: “Together we collected several bags of litter around Hammonds Pond. It was surprising how much rubbish was there and in the pond.

“There was an awful lot of sweetcorn cans along with empty bottles of pop, glass bottles, empty sweet and crisp packets.

“Karen and I are part of Friends of Hammonds Pond group, so we take an interest in the area by volunteering in activities like this litter pick and organise events for the community. We are pleased to be able to support the local area.”

Carlisle City Council spokesman said: “Thanks to all our litter champions for helping to keep Carlisle clean.

“To join up, please email wasteos@carlisle.gov.uk and we will send you the sign-up sheet.”
