A Carlisle United fan who can chair meetings of the Blues’ various supporters’ organisations is being sought.

A member of the Cumbrians’ faithful is needed to oversee the Carlisle United Supporters’ Groups (CUSG), who meet regularly.

Previous chair Simon Clarkson has stood down from the position after three years.

He has since been appointed as leader of a new supporter liaison team at Brunton Park.

It leaves a vacancy for someone to preside over CUSG meetings, which are attended by fan groups and club directors and officials, as a key part of United’s “fan engagement”.

Clarkson said: “After three enjoyable years as chair it is time to hand over the baton.

“We are at really important juncture as we hopefully emerge from the pandemic with the return of fans.

“This gives CUSG, as representatives of fans, a real chance to work with the club on joint initiatives such as the new in-house catering arrangements.

“The new chair will be at the forefront of optimising the benefits to fans of these changes.”

The voluntary position is described as independent of the club and the chosen candidate will chair meetings involving groups such as supporters’ trust CUOSC, away travel fans, thecumbrians.net forum, London Branch supporters, United’s disabled fans’ group, LGBTQ representatives, Scottish supporters and west Cumbrian travel.

The chair is expected to “maintain and improve the lines of communication between the club and CUSG members and within the CUSG membership,” as well as liaising with club chief executive Nigel Clibbens regarding CUSG matters.

They are required to “promote working together and [the] effectiveness of CUSG” and be a point of contact for CUSG members.”

They must ensure CUSG meetings are held on at least six-weekly intervals, engage with CUSG members to ensure their issues are on the agenda, ensure agendas are issued and published in advance and ensure “true and fair” minutes are produced, and published within seven days of a meeting.

The chair will also ensure media enquiries are directed appropriately, while the job spec also requires the chosen fan to chair meetings in a way that “all members of CUSG [are] given equal standing and opportunity to participate”.

The invitation for fans to come forward follows a recent CUSG meeting in which former CUOSC chairman John Kukuc had been voted into the CUSG chair position, before he withdrew from the process “following careful consideration of concerns expressed by members raised over his appointment”, according to meeting minutes.

Anyone interested in the role should send a personal statement to hello@cusg.co.uk setting out why they would like the position.

The closing date for applications is Sunday, July 4 and the selection process will be held online on Thursday, July 8.
