The quick thinking of two community police officers who helped a child with serious injuries has been praised as ‘a story of real hope’.

Carlisle Police revealed that PC Mark Christie and PCSO Damon Mcrea from the Carlisle West Neighborhood Policing Team assisted in providing first aid to an injured child in Heysham Park on Monday.

The youngster had fallen from a climbing frame and was identified as potentially suffering from a spinal injury which was confirmed later as a fractured spine in two places.

A police spokesman said: “Through swift action and effectively working together with paramedics, further serious injury was avoided.

“This is just one example of how neighbourhood teams are working to keep Cumbria safe.”

Mayor of Carlisle, Pamela Birks praised their response: “I think they are to be commended on what they did.

“Their quick thinking has ensured this young person didn’t make their injuries any worse. It just shows that the police aren’t here just to stop crime. They’re here to make sure of our wellbeing.”

Cllr Birks said that the story gave reassurance to the community.

“The fact that police are trained in CPR is fabulous. Given everything that’s going on at the minute this is a story of real hope.”

She added that PC Christie was doing important work in the area.

“I think it’s to be praised that the new officer we have for the west of the city, Mark Christie, is working really hard to ensure police and constables are out on the street communicating with residents.”

She said it was important for police to be approachable on their patch.

Councillor Birks said that PC Christie has brought a “bobby on the beat” feel back to policing in the area.

“He’s made some real inroads since he took up the post just over a year ago.”

Resident Helen Rook said: “Always teach our children not to be afraid of police. They are good people, working hard to keep the community safe and are here to help us as this fine example shows.”
