Fire crews were called to a home in Carlisle this afternoon after an arson attempt at the property.
Both Carlisle East and Carlisle West fire crews were called to the property on Grey Street at about 3pm after some had poured petrol through a letterbox on the street.
A spokesman for Carlisle East, said: "Someone had poured an accelerant into the letterbox and then attempted to set it on fire."
The arsonist had managed to set the accelerant alight, however a resident at the property had began to put it out before fire crews arrived at the scene.
Fire officer's secured the property by using a letterbox flap to stop any further attempts if arson at the address.
Crew Manager Cameron wished to remind people of fire safety after the incident.
He said: "People need to check they have working smoke alarms"
Make sure that if they have wheelie bins they are put away at night when they don't have to be out"
If anybody is wanting a free safety visit they can contact the fire service."
