Eleven new electric vehicle chargepoints are now available in north Cumbria in an effort to make the area more accessible to electric car users.

The new chargepoints in Carlisle are the result of a partnership between Carlisle City Council and local Community Benefit Society Charge My Street.

Each of the 11 chargepoints located in the city centre and the surrounding area has the facility to charge two cars simultaneously.

A further 11 charging points are planned over the coming months.  Carlisle City Councillor and portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, Nigel Christian said: "We want to play our part in protecting the environment and in the worldwide movement which aims to tackle climate change. By installing the chargepoints we are helping eliminate pollution and reducing carbon emissions.

“We have invested in electric vehicles within our own fleet and I encourage other businesses and residents to go electric too.”

Cllr Christian was on hand to officially open one of the new chargepoints at the council’s Stanwix car park on Wednesday.

Sales of EVs in Europe more than doubled in 2020 despite the overall decrease in overall car sales over the coronavirus pandemic.

The government announced last year that they plan to end the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

The chargepoints can be found in the following locations:

· Union Lane car park, Brampton

· Paddy’s Market car park, Caldewgate

· Silloth Street (off Wigton Road)

· Milbourne Street

· Shadygrove Road car park

· The Sands Centre car park

· Westmorland Street

· Stanwix car park

· Linton Tweeds at Shaddongate

· Dalston Kingsway car park

A second site at Brampton in Showfields car park will be operational at the end of June 2021.

The chargepoints are part of a network of Charge my Street chargepoints throughout other locations in Cumbria and Lancaster.

There is still time for anyone who wants to suggest either their own site or a community setting as a potential chargepoint host.
