A CHARITY shop in Carlisle, which generates vital funds for animals in need has been forced to close for the week due to lack of volunteers.

Oak Tree Animals’ Charity has been forced to temporarily close its charity shop in Carlisle between today and Saturday June 19.

It is a sad day for the community as the Carlisle shop and the Keswick shop both generate vital income for Oak Tree which all goes to help the animals in need. The Carlisle Shop Manager and a few fantastic volunteers normally run the shop, but with the manager away on annual leave and volunteers already committed to other volunteer roles within the charity, the charity had no choice but to close for the week.

The charity has been struggling to rally more help in recent weeks and even after numerous social media appeals are still unable to cover all the shop shifts required.

Lorna de Mello, Oak Tree’s communications officer said: “Oak Tree has a dedicated network of volunteers who help with all aspects of work within the charity. We are incredibly grateful for everything they contribute.

“Their support helps us continue the work we do, here at Oak Tree and within the community.

“Just last week we celebrated Volunteers Week 2021, a week where we celebrate our amazing volunteers and have the opportunity to thank them for what they do. Our volunteers are from all walks of life and each month we vote for a ‘Volunteer of the Month’ who gets a reward for all their hard work and support.”

The charity is asking those over the age of 16 who love animals to get involved for at least 1 shift between Tuesday and Saturday, 10.00am to 1.00pm or 1.00 to 4.00pm. Training and support will be provided.
