A community youth organisation are fearing for their survival as they search for a new space to hold their sessions.

The Border Reiver Cadets (BRC) would normally hold their sessions at the Petteril Bank Community Centre, but are struggling for funds to continue holding them.

The cadets provide children aged eight to 18-years-old with survival and life skills.

“This [the BRC] is about giving the disadvantaged a platform in society. It’s about giving them something to be proud of and to believe in,"said BRC cadet commande, Daniel Cleough.

“For these kids, it means a lot. Not just for the kids, but for the parents as well.

“Some of these parents are desperate to have their children doing something like this, and until BRC came about there wasn’t anything.

“They are literally there half an hour before the doors open, because they’re so keen to get their kids involved.

“The only way we can see ourselves surviving in the long term is if we significantly increase our subs and that’s a double edged sword. We would lose the kids who benefit from the organisation the most.

The BRC was set up in 2018 to “bridge a gap” and offer children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and children with learning difficulties and behavioural issues with the chance to learn valuable life skills.

Daniel said there are currently just enough funds to keep the organisation running over the summer months, but they are

He added: "We’ve all been putting our hands in our pockets to try and keep things afloat.

"Now we’re just trying to put feelers out to see what’s out there that we could tap into, or if there's support that we could get whether that is the use of a community hall, storage container, or a bit of land."

Independent Councillor for Botcherby and Harraby North, Jack Paton, is a supporter of the BRC.

He said: "We need to find a new premises, so if somebody has somewhere that we can use that would be great.

“It gets them [the children] off the street.

"They’re being taught discipline, they’re being taught respect.

"They get to put up tents, they’re working together in teams.

"It’s all to do with their development, but we’ll be in a situation shortly where we’ll be forced to closed because we can’t afford to carry on unless we find somewhere."
