MAGISTRATES have imposed a 42-month driving ban on a Maryport motorist who has admitted drink driving.

Paul John Thompson, 53, of King Street, Maryport, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Workington Magistrates' Court. He committed the offence on April 11.

The court heard that he drove a Ford Focus in Nelson Street, Maryport while his alcohol reading was 93mcg in 100mls of breath.

The legal limit is 35mcg.

After hearing the details of the case, and representations from defence lawyer Claire Kirkpatrick, magistrates imposed a community order.

As punishment, the order includes an eight-week electronically monitored curfew.

It will run each day from 7pm to 7am, said magistrates. The defendant was also told that he must pay £85 prosecution costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

He was offered the drink driver rehabilitation course.

If completed in time - by December 23 of next year - this will reduce the length of the defendant's driving ban by 42 weeks.

Magistrates explained that the defendant would have to pay for the course and the cost can be up to £250.

Magistrates said that they took the defendant's guilty plea to the offence into account as they passed the sentence for the offence.
