FAMILIES turned out in force for a west Cumbrian autism charity’s event, which was designed to let families know they are not alone.

Bee Unique, based in Ghyllhead near Flimby, was set up by a family who know first hand what it is like to raise children with learning difficulties and navigate the special educational needs system.

Families from across west Cumbria were invited to Ghyllhead House, the charity’s base for their autism friendly event.

The family fun day marked the end of half term and as it took place on World Oceans Week, was themed around pirates.

Pirates of the Solway was attended by 26 families, all of whom enjoyed their day with the charity.

One Cumbrian parent said: “Thank you so much for a lovely time today. Carragh really enjoyed himself and everyone was so friendly and welcoming”

The charity aims to support parents with the challenges involved in raising a young person with autism.

One parent said: “It was such fun, for years I’ve felt alone when it comes to Blakes Autism but this group is amazing for making you realise there is absolutely nothing at all a child with Autism can’t achieve”

“We and the kids thoroughly enjoyed ourselves today, especially the pirate theme” said another.”

Nadia Shaw, founded the charity with her partner Dave Parsons, sister Natalie McCarron and Martin McCarron.

Nadia said that the family fun day events are beneficial for parents as they can be around people who are going through the same struggles.

She said: “Because we’ve involved the autism families, they can all relate to each other and they can all offer advice and support.

“Everybody was in the same situation where they were laid back and allowed to be themselves.

Nadia said: “A lot of people they do feel the pressures about their child having a meltdown, it can be a struggle for them.”
