Over the weekend, readers were asked if there should be a move away from bonfires and fireworks at events after a city councillor called for more environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Independent Carlisle city councillor for Botcherby and Harraby North, Jeffrey Bomford, said he would like to see laser shows considered as an alternative to fireworks and bonfires at events in the city.

Here’s what you had to say.

Reader Margaret Walker agreed, saying: “I think it is a good idea, and hopefully [it will] save some money to use for another day of entertainment.

“It would certainly save on the clearing up aftermath the next day and who knows when a cancellation over bad weather or a visit from Covid-19 will appear, which of course has happened in the past.

“Although I have to say in the past I have loved Carlisle fireworks display, it’s probably now a good time to make some safer alternatives.”

Brenda Cayne said: “I don’t think it’s about the beautiful display of colour and light. That’s lovely, isn’t it?

“But does it have to have those explosions? They are not fun, they are terrifying, so if there’s no way of making a display without the explosions I’d rather it became a barbecue night, or a fete with a few small fireworks and sparklers.

“Villages and towns could all have their own.

“The explosions HAVE to stop because they traumatise people and animals. But the fun doesn’t have to stop.”

Kev P Foy said: “They are a nuisance, but they are also part of our history and culture, so they should stay but managed areas under supervision – of course on November 5 only, and not in people’s backyards.”

James Gallagher said: “I think fireworks and bonfires should be enjoyed but limited to the 5th of November and not all that blooming wee,k including the weekends either side of it!”

Anne Gardner said: “Should be just organised events; not private sales. We used to love them.”
