BARROW is the subject of a new video travel guide highlighting the history of the town.

The travel vlog created by YouTuber Jonathan Wheeler aka ‘Travel Obscurer’, has been viewed more than 5,000 times since it was posted on May 16.

In the video, Jonathan explores some of the lesser-known parts of Barrow and highlights the history of the town, which he said is ‘fascinating’.

Jonathan said: “I moved to Bardsea two years ago with my wife and have been exploring the local area ever since.

“I have filmed travel guides all over the world including Beirut, Tibet and Helsinki. I had planned to do more travelling in the past year but with Covid I decided to look a little closer to home for inspiration.

“Before moving to this part of the world I was aware of the negative labels Barrow often gets in the media. But I was completely shocked when I started looking for places to film.

“I think the area is wonderful. The Victorian buildings, the sea and the landscape of the Lakes in the distance – I wanted to bring attention to the great things about Barrow.

Jonathan, originally from Leicester, starting filming travel guides after leaving his previous career in law. He said that while he was filming, he was approached by a pessimistic member of the public.

He said: “While I was filming a lady started talking to me, and when I told her what I was doing she said she didn’t think there was anything in Barrow worth filming. I told her I had just come from the beautiful park gardens and this prompted her to go and take a look herself!

“It can be easy to get sucked into to thinking negative things about your hometown, and that definitely isn’t unique to Barrow.

“I hope the video helps teach people from around the world about Barrow’s fascinating history and its beautiful landscape and architecture.”
