A PENRITH man threatened a pub landlord with a screwdriver.

Michael O’Shaughnessy, 37, of Brunswick Road, Penrith, admitted threatening the man with a "sharply pointed" implement on March 3 last year, Carlisle's Rickergate court heard.

Prosecutor George Shelley said the landlord of the Pinny pub in Burrowgate heard loud voices outside in the early hours and went to investigate.

He found people arguing - and then asked O’Shaughnessy to quieten down.

The defendant responded by pulling a "large screwdriver" from his pocket - but the landlord knocked it to the ground. Sean Harkin, defending, said O’Shaughnessy had the screwdriver because he he planned to do work at his girlfriend's home.

The defendant admitted being drunk but insisted what happened was out of character. Magistrates imposed a suspended 18-week jail term - along with £300 prosecution costs and a £122 victim surcharge.

He must complete 20-days of rehabilitation days and do 120 hours of unpaid work.
