NEWS & Star readers have been critical of the condition of roads with potholes up to 12 inches wide.

Aspatria’s acting mayor, Alan Maxwell, said the condition of some roads – and especially Station Road – is a disgrace.

“You could honestly be accused of drink driving the way you have to swerve around the potholes, there are so many of them,” he claimed at a meeting of Aspatria Town Council.

Reacting to the news on Facebook, Anita White said: “We pay councils enough money! If it’s not in taxes it’s for parking.

“They are okay sending and chasing us up for their bills but I wonder how big their bill would be in car damages because of their botched up roads?”

Sara Burgess commented: “It’s impossible to drive down roads in a straight line without swerving because of potholes.”

It’s not just Aspatria that has the problem though – Chris Clark added: “Roads in Carlisle are a disgrace. We’ve recently had ours 'repaired' – and I use that term very lightly.

“Two weeks after the potholes where filled the same potholes are back again!

“The gravel they put in has all come away. Everytime I phone the council about it, I get 'we are aware of the situation and it will be dealt with in due course'. In other words no it won’t.”

Ashleigh Jayne agreed – she wrote: “The roads in Carlisle are disgraceful. My partner damaged his wheel driving home.

“No one needs that expense at the moment. Especially when we all pay through the nose in taxes!”
