NEWS and Star readers have been reacting to the news that Copeland residents are being asked for their views on a potential nuclear waste disposal site in Cumbria.

The Copeland GDF Working Group is asking local people for their views on where in the borough could be suitable for the disposal of higher activity radioactive waste.

The working group have begun work to identify possible locations in Copeland - including the area off the coast.

Formed in November, the GDF working group has already started engaging with locals and providing a range of information.

One of its primary tasks is to identify a search area (or areas) that could be considered further by a community partnership.

It will do so by taking into account a range of published information and the views of local people.

However, readers of the News and Star on Facebook did not seem keen on the idea, which would see nuclear waste sealed away deep underground.

David Eyley wrote: "No doubt the local council will go for it as it's jobs, like the mine, because that's all they see, and if they reduce unemployment figures by getting any sort of work, it's a vote winner.

"However, maybe they should think about the environment, geology, infrastructure, and what it is we are actually thinking about the highly dangerous stuff they want to bury here."

Lou Wright added: "No. The big Sellafield leak in the 80's, Chernobyl fall out in the 80's, and the fact that we already have enough buried underground says that we have already had our lot thank you! We are already irradiated enough."

Heidi Hilland wrote: "No stop dumping everything in Cumbria," while Ian Thompson added: "A big fat no from me."

But Phil Haslehurst was slightly more curious - he said: "It's already here and being stored. Twice now, there have been geological surveys showing the local strata isn't feasible. One way or another it will stay here, but there has to be other resolutions."
