ONCE again we have been looking back through our archives.

Back in 1963 we have a sale at Harrison & Hetherington’s mart, the caption doesn’t state whether it was the Earl Street or Botchergate sale ring. Maybe one of our older readers would know?

Local businesses are also featured – with the launch of a new fork lift truck at Lloyd Tractors attracting a lot of interest in 1981 and a demonstration of a machine called the Hedgehopper at Steadmans of Caldbeck which was designed to help quad bikes get over obstacles.

The annual horse sales at Hopes Auction at Wigton were a fixture on the calendar for many years and we look back at the 1970 sale. Ploughing matches are another farming tradition and Skitby Farm at Smithfield hosted Kirklinton YFC’s match back in 1981.

And while 2001 usually brings back sad memories of foot and mouth we have a picture of little Kerry Sim from Westnewton with her Suffolk Cross ewe and newly born Texel cross lamb which was born early that year.
