A NEW housing estate in Penrith has gained approval from Eden District Council.

The estate will be built on White Ox Farm Inglewood Road with permission for the start of the project granted for the next three years.

The proposed development consisting of 67 homes, received the go-ahead from the Local Planning Authority on Thursday March 4th.

Developers Riverside/Atkinson Building Contractors' vision for the area includes permission for the building of some 17 two-bedroom, 10 three-bedroom and 4 four-bedroom properties which will be affordable for the rental market.

In addition, plans also outline proposals for the building of 10 two-bedroom, 16 three-bedroom and 10 four-bedroom houses that will be able to be owned outright.

Planning documents confirm that the estate plan received approval from Penrith Town Council due to its provision for the establishment of a scheme with a registered housing provider to ensure that the properties are afforable.

The previous Housing Need Survey carried out by Eden District Council on behalf of the Town Council for the Neighbourhood Development Plan stated: "there is a need to provide affordable housing for younger people to enable them to remain in the area."

As a result it was therefore determined that the proposals fall in line with the current Local Plan. The development had been under consideration since August 26th 2020.

Oliver Shimell, Assistant Director Planning and Economic Development stated in the Decision Notice that confirmed plans had received approval:
"Subject to compliance with the additional conditions attached to this permission, the development would be in accordance with the development plan and would not materially harm the character or appearance of the area or the amenity currently enjoyed by neighbouring occupiers and would be acceptable in terms of highway safety."
