A large meteor blazed across UK skies on Sunday night, delighting those lucky enough to spot it, including one lucky Carlisle resident.

The meteor was spotted shortly before 10pm and was visible for around seven seconds. It was captured on cameras across the country, in Cumbria as well as other UK towns and cities such as Manchester, Cardiff, Bath, and Milton Keynes.

Daz Bell, who is a member of News & Star camera club, posted footage of the fireball that lit up the night sky over Britain last night. He managed to capture the fireball which was seen across the UK at 9:57:33pm.

Mr Bell lives in the south west of Carlisle and, although he admits the footage is a little grainy, it could well be the only footage of the natural phenomena caught on film from the city itself.

He said: "I’ve been into astronomy and astrophotography for about 10 years but capturing meteors for about a year.

"Unfortunately it’s not the greatest footage as the meteorite was at a greater altitude as it passed over Cumbria, my camera was set to infrared which tends to reflect dust and insects, these show up as the streaks you see in the footage.

"My skycam is set up to catch astronomical events such as these, as the meteorite entered the atmosphere it was dropping in altitude burning up as it went but it appears some fragments have survived and reached earth. He explains that footage will have been of even better in the south of England than in the north.

He added: "The dramatic footage from the south of the U.K. was a result of it being far lower in the sky.

"Other than anyone in Scotland this might be one of the first captures."

The UK meteor network group said more than 120 people had reported seeing Sunday night’s meteor.
