In today's gallery, we look back at a time that many readers will easily recall and one that might be a mystery to our younger readers.

Looking back at today's set of images, one gets a real sense of what life was like in Carlisle and Britain in general prior to the so-called 'digital age'.

John Major was the Prime Minister at the time in the UK. However, the grip of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons was weakening.

Led by John Smith, Labour, instead were in the ascendency. Tragedy would strike in May of 1994 when the Labour leader passed away suddenly aged 55.

In July, Tony Blair would fight off the advances of John Prescott and Margaret Beckett to become Leader of the Opposition.

In popular culture, the year would see the first UK National Lottery draw take place in November.

Hit movies of the time were the likes of 'Pulp Fiction', 'Forrest Gump', 'Shawshank Redemption' and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' in a real landmark year for film.

In music, the likes of Oasis with 'Live Forever', Blur with 'Girls and Boys', Whigfield with 'Saturday Night' and Mariah Carey's holiday's classic 'All I Want For Christmas is You' provided the soundtrack to a momentous year.

In sport, Manchester United retained the Premier League football title with a 2–1 away win over Ipswich Town putting them beyond the reach of their last remaining challengers Blackburn Rovers in May.

Later that month, Manchester United become only the sixth English football club to have won the league title and FA Cup double after triumphing 4–0 over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Rivals Liverpool FC replaced Graeme Souness with club coach Roy Evans, after a tumultuous three years for the Scotsman at Anfield as boss.

In Carlisle, we see a city hooked on its sport, an area where solidarity in the community is of paramount importance and, well, some flooding at Rickerby Park!

Some things never change.
