The year 1989 was undoubtedly one of the most significant of the 20th century on the world stage.
This period was a turning point in political history because a wave of revolutions which swept the Eastern Bloc in Europe, starting in Poland and Hungary, coming to a head with the opening of the Berlin Wall in November, followed by the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, embracing the overthrow of the communist dictatorship in Romania in December, and ending in December 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
In China, pro-democracy protesters clashed with Chinese Security Forces in Tiananmen Square in June and pictures of a man taking on a tank were seen on TV news throughout the world.
It felt like the year itself was one of typified by the widespread embracing of a brighter, more equal future.
Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web in this year with New Zealand, Japan and Australia's establishing internet connections shortly after.
