A SUSPENDED jail sentence has been imposed on a Whitehaven man after he admitted assaulting a pensioner.

Ian William Stewart, 61, of Osprey Gardens, Moresby Parks, assaulted Alan Turnbull, causing him actual bodily harm, on September 14, 2019, Workington's Magistrates' Court was told.

After hearing an outline of the offence, magistrates imposed a 16 week prison term but suspended the sentence for a year.

Court papers outline their reasons for the sentence.

The record states that the defendant caused "serious injury" to an elderly man while he (the defendant) was under the influence of alcohol in a public place.

Magistrates suspended the sentence because Stewart was of previous good character and had been assessed to be a low risk of reoffending. He must complete 60 hours unpaid work and pay £3,000 to the victim, and £85 court costs.
