MEMBERS of Cumbria's first Lacrosse club are running 1,000km to raise money for equipment.

Border City Lacrosse Club have recently moved into their new home at Cotehill Park, Brampton, which they share with Irthing Vale Cricket Club.

Now members are looking to raise £600 for a set of goals, pitch equipment and to development the club.

Initially members planned to collectively run 430km in January, the equivalent of a return trip from Brampton to Stockport Lacrosse Club, the oldest in England.

But now they've upped the ante to 1,000km and so far clocked-up 720km.

The club's was started two years ago, and last year played in the Scottish league.

This year however they will play in a North of England Men's Lacrosse Association league.

Dan Clements, club chair, said: "Lacrosse is not typically a well played sport in Cumbria, we are the first team and things are very grassroots.

"Obviously the pandemic has affected things, the move with Irthing Vale Cricket Club has been expensive.

"Lacrosse is actually one of the fastest growing sports in North America and was first played by the indigenous Americans.

"It's been in the UK since about 1870 and was widely played in Manchester.

It's played widely in the south of England and London, in the universities and throughout Scotland Wales and Ireland."

Currently the club has about 20 players in the men's team but are looking to start women's team in the near future and is making a call to any who would like more to try the sport.

They also coach more than 200 school pupils in Cumbria, when Covid-19 restrictions allow - this includes Brampton's William Howard School where the club train.
