NETWORK Rail has put out a warning to passengers after Storm Christoph deluged the network across Cumbria.

The announcement comes after train operator Northern Rail cancelled services between Maryport and Carlisle because of flooding.

Network Rail say there is currently safety speed restrictions on the West Coast main line on routes through Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire - flooding has affected a number of rail routes.

It's using high volume pumps to clear the flooding so it can carry out safety inspections - fast moving floodwater can wash away the track foundation stone, known as ballast, making railway lines unstable.

Passengers across the North West are being advised to check before they travel

Phil James, managing director for Network Rail’s North West route, said: “As expected we’re now seeing the full force of Storm Christoph and our extreme weather action teams are working flat out to keep trains moving and passengers safe.

“I’d urge anyone who must travel for the reasons set out by government over the next few days to check National Rail Enquiries or with their train operator before setting off so they know exactly what to expect.”

He added that the ground in the North of England is very wet from the heavy rain and with more on the way there is an increased risk of landslips and flooding.

Passengers are being advised that journeys will take longer than normal during the bad weather.

This morning Northern Rail said rail services between Maryport and Carlisle have been been cancelled because of flooding - disruption expected to last until 7pm this evening.

A spokesman for the rail operator said: "Due to heavy rainfall on numerous parts of the railway services are currently unable to run between Carlisle and Maryport in both directions.

"The latest photos from Network Rail show the railway completely submerged.

"Roads in the area are also reported to be deteriorating.

"Customers are advised do not travel.

"Road transport will not be provided in lieu of the cancelled trains between Maryport and Carlisle."
