After it was reported that Cumbria had suffered its worst week ever for new Covid-19 infections, News & Star readers shared their thoughts.

Shocking new figures showed the county’s death toll surged to more than 830 last week.

Senior managers at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust continue to operate at the highest level of alert as the surge in patient numbers continues.

And following this news, our readers have shared their concern and frustration.

David Walker said: "When will everybody wake up and abide by the coronavirus guidelines which they have been told to abide by? With some people the answer is never."

Paul Graham commented: "People hospitalised [or] dying at this time probably caught the virus around Christmas,or possibly New Year.

"Some people were behaving as though this pandemic didn't exist. Current activity is likely to see hospitalisation [or] deaths in three-to-four weeks time. Let's hope numbers fall."

Reader Suzanne Kelsey said: "Trouble is so many people are still at work. This is nothing like the first lockdown when roads etc were quiet, not that I know as been shielding for 11 months but told by others .

"The government need to be more strict on this and support more of those working in the GIG economy, financially.

"Also I do believe from those I know in education, there are more pupils in school than last time."
