Police have confirmed a man in his eighties has died after a crash on the A595.
Officer have name the man after the crash on the Loop road on Thursday night.
The road was closed for several hours hour while an investigation was carried out.
The force has named the 85-year-old-man as John McTear from the area.
A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "A man has died following a collision on the Loop Road, Whitehaven on Thursday, December 17 at about 4.54pm.
"The collision involved two vehicles, a Volkswagen Polo and a Citroen Nemo.
"Local man, John McTear, aged 85, known to friends and family as Jack, sadly died whilst in intensive care at Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.
"Jack leaves behind a widow Marjorie, two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren."
