A LANDMARK city centre building looks set to go under the wrecker's ball after plans for its demolition were submitted.

Carlisle City Council is looking to demolish the art deco style fronted Paton House, at Victorian Viaduct, as part of development proposals for The Citadel site and railway station as part of the Borderlands Growth Deal.

According to documents submitted last week, the demolition is proposed to start in March and finish in June.

Built in 1937, it was formerly a car showroom.

Louise O'Brien, owner of The Bed Shop Carlisle, a business based at the property, said the notice to vacate was given in March.

The business will be relocating to a site on Lowther Street in the near future.

Total Enigma, that offers activities like Lazer Quest and Escape Rooms, also operates at the site.

According to submitted documents: "The demolition of Paton House will allow full understanding of The Citadels site, and provide an opportunity to undertake additional surveys and ground investigations in order to help prepare a robust scheme for the proposed regeneration-redevelopment of the wider site.

"The proposal does not include disturbing potential archaeological deposits.

"This development would open up the site and provide the opportunity for more detailed archaeological evaluation prior to the development of regeneration proposals.

It adds: "Paton House is the only building on the Citadels site in Carlisle that is neither listed as a heritage asset."

"Constructed in 1937 as the SMT building, Paton House was constructed on the site of one of the former women prison cell blocks."
