CUMBRIA Tourism is encouraging the public to support local shops and hospitality businesses which are reopening this week.

Concerns have been raised over the effect lockdown has had on small businesses, with many fearing they will not survive in 2021.

Criticism has been drawn towards the Government’s decision to close small businesses while larger chains and supermarkets remain open.

So Cumbria Tourism is calling for the county to get behind their community’s businesses by choosing to spend closer to home this Christmas.

Part of the county’s official Destination Management Organisation (DMO)’s Recovery Marketing campaign, Cumbria Tourism’s ‘Shop Local’ initiative aims to line up with the national ‘Small Business Saturday’ on December 5.

This will focus on highlighting the huge range of products and services offered by independents.

Cumbria Tourism’s managing director Gill Haigh says: “Cumbria’s small businesses are what makes our county special – dedicated and hard-working entrepreneurs who put their heart and soul into providing amazing customer service.

“Now more than ever these businesses need our help.

“When you choose to shop local you don’t just receive a high-quality product and service, you make a real difference. With such a wide range of fantastic local produce and experiences right here on our doorstep, why would you need to look elsewhere?”

The Cumbrian visitor economy has been able to survive due to its resilience and innovation during 2020, with many businesses now offer delivery or a click and collect service. They have also been credited for limiting the spread of virus through information distribution to customers.

Small Business Saturday aims to increase profits for businesses, but also to take the opportunity to spread ways to support local businesses.

Customers have been urged to get involved on social media by sharing their stories using the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK to highlight businesses that go above and beyond and help others looking to spend more mindfully.

She added: “Shopping local needn’t come at an increased price either. Cumbria Tourism’s MyCumbria Card scheme offers those who live and work in the county fantastic offers such as £3 off when you spend £30 at Booths, 20% off food and drink with the Inn Collection, 2 for 1 entry to Holker Hall & Gardens and much more. “The card encourages residents to enjoy the ultimate staycation right here in Cumbria, as well as the flexibility to book memorable experiences.”
