A former deputy editor of the Whitehaven News has died.
Terence Harrison, who lived at Cleator Moor, died quietly in his sleep on October 30 2020, aged 83.
He was originally from York and moved to Cumbria with his family when his dad, Horace George Harrison, got a job at Egremont chocolate factory.
The rest of his family - mother Florence Annie Harrison, brother Desmond and sister Peggy also came.
His parents moved back to York, but Terry stayed in Cumbria.
Starting as a teaboy, he joined the Whitehaven News straight from grammar school, working initially under editor Walter Thompson.
He worked in the media industry for a career spanning 40 years.
Terry’s love of all things houndtrailing ensured he became a well respected reporter in the houndtrailing fraternity.
He and his daughters used to attend hound trailing meetings up to three times a week, regardless of the weather conditions, which could have been hail, rain or shine.
One of his colleagues, Dave Siddall, who was chief reporter with the Whitehaven News said: “Terry was always our go to expert on local sports, especially hound trailing.
“He used his knowledge to keep the hound trailing community up to speed.
“He used to go to most of the hound trailing meetings and got to know most of the hound trailing community.”
He progressed from journalist to take the role of deputy editor at the Whitehaven News, but his love of sports continued.
Terry enjoyed playing darts with partner Ken Todd and with Colin Martin and Chris Cardwell. He also liked to play outdoor bowls and often went to watch Whitehaven Rugby Club play.
Terry was a family man and was greatly loved by all of them.
He leaves behind wife June (Rose), daughters Julie and Linda, six grandchildren: Natasha, Shona, Scarlett, Eleanor, Virginia and Abigail and one great grandchild, Derry.
The family said he fought bravely to stay with them and he was the best husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather that anybody could have wished for.
Terry’s private funeral service will take place on November 6 at Distington Hall crematorium at 2.45pm, with family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Dementia UK c/o Adams, Read & Hocking Funeral Directors, Towerson Street Funeral Home, Towerson Street, Cleator, CA23 3EL.
