A SPOOKY trail has been set-up in Stanwix to give children that typical exciting Halloween experience whilst being Covid safe and raising funds for a good cause.

The Girls Friendly Society, based in Stanwix, did not want to see local children miss out on another exciting experience due to the pandemic.

So, they put their heads together to work out a way that they can still enjoy Halloween despite the pandemic.

Lyn Marriott, group leader, said: “The girls have not been at school, there are a lot of things that they have missed out on.

“The volunteers talked about it and we wondered if there was something that we could do to give the girls something to focus on and to do.

“But also to give other children something to do rather than the usual knocking on people’s doors and receiving sweets.”

What they came up with was a trail through Stanwix with sweets, puzzles, and Halloween decorations that would give them something to do during the half term.

At the same time, the girls chose to raise money for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw which have seen fundraising opportunities slashed this year.

“We came up with the idea of a trail around the Stanwix area and we would sell the trail for a charity of the girl’s choice.

“We thought, no-one is going to just buy the trail and they want sweets, so we put a little goodie bag of sweets in.

“So they could have some sweets, do the trail, and it’s something to do over half term.”

Stanwix News is selling the trails, with the sweet treats too, for £2.

A year seven pupil at Trinity School said: “The trail is really good fun because of the fact we can’t go trick or treating its great to go out and look for things. The bag of sweets is an extra bonus.

“It’s good to know we are having fun while raising money for charity. My school friends and I all had a great time.”
