A Carlisle area vets practice has warned cat owners never to give their pet paracetamol if they are unwell.

Coomara Veterinary Practice, in Carleton just outside Carlisle, has stressed to cat owners that even a small amount of the pain relief medication commonly used by people is in fact toxic to cats.

As such, pet owners should never give their cat paracetamol, under any circumstances.

A message posted on the practice’s social media explained: “Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is a common over-the-counter medicine that most of us usually keep around the house.

“Some owners might be tempted to use it on their pets in an attempt to help them when they are ill.

“However, even a small amount of paracetamol can have severe toxic effects on your cats, as they’re not able to metabolise it like we are.”

If a cat does ingest any paracetamol, they may show signs of depression, difficulty breathing, salivation and vomiting, and a bluish discolouration of the mouth, the vets practice went on to explain.

“If not promptly addressed, paracetamol intoxication will cause liver failure and culminates in death.

“If you suspect your cat has ingested paracetamol, contact us immediately.”

It was also stressed to only ever give to pets the medication prescribed to them by a vet.

“Keep all medication away from your pets’ reach. If your pet is unwell and you want to help, contact us for advice.”
