Eden Council has announced that it is extending its offer of free parking at most of its off-street locations until the end of the year.

The council's decision to extend its free parking offer was announced at Tuesday's Eden Council executive meeting, in which the recommendations of a comprehensive parking and movement study for Penrith was discussed.

Services portfolio holder Michael Tomkin, said that the extension of free parking would "further help local traders in Penrith and Appleby".

Tuesday's announcement was welcomed by Penrith Town Council, which had previously written to the council in support of the proposal alongside Penrith Business Improvement District, Penrith Industrial Business Improvement District and the local Chamber of Trade.

During Tuesday's meeting, it was also agreed by the Eden Council executive to set up a dedicated group to realise the recommendations of the Penrith parking and movement study, which had been funded by Eden Council, Cumbria County Council and Penrith Town Council.

The report suggests a range of changes to parking in Penrith to further improve accessibility to the town.
