A fundraiser who had planned a biking trip along Route 66 to mark his 66th has turned his attentions to walking the length of its local namesake instead.
Having been a biker in his younger days, Alan Dunn's bucket list included riding from Chicago to Santa Monica in Los Angeles on a Harley-Davidson Low Rider to mark turning 66 this year.
When factors including Covid-19 put a stop to that plan, friend Roger Scoon suggested the pair could instead travel the length of England's A66 on his three-wheeled motorbike.
But, while Alan is looking forward to taking up that offer, he decided he needed to do something more challenging as well, and hit upon the idea of walking the length of the route from Workington to Middlesbrough instead.
Safety considerations mean Alan will not be walking on the main road itself but following a route close by on his 120-mile, 10-day adventure.
An original member of Keswick Lions Club and founder of its annual town beer festival, Alan decided to raise money for the club to plug some of the gap left by the cancellation of this year's event.
Half of the money raised will go to supporting local causes, with the remainder going to the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which supports humanitarian efforts worldwide.
The Keswick town councillor, who ran the town's Open All Hours shop before retiring, said: "I'm looking forward to doing the walk. Hopefully the weather will be kind but I've got my waterproof clothing ready.
"I love fundraising. I'm really pleased because I first set my target at £1,000. Since then I've upped it to £2,000 because I went through the £1,000 barrier, and I went through the £3,000 barrier this weekend so I've put it up to £4,000."
Alan is due to set off from the Steam Packet pub in Workington on Friday, September 18, cheered on by member of Maryport Lions Club and friends from Workington's former club.
He will be supported by friends and family at various stages on the route and donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Alan-Dunn-TheA66
