Cumbria County Council has been handed a gold award for promoting the Armed Forces Covenant in the workplace.

The covenant supports serving personnel, veterans, and their families by allowing time off for reservists to train and gives priority job interviews for veterans.

The Ministry of Defence, Johnny Mercer MP praised the authority for setting a positive attitude to employing the ex-forces community.

It is a step up for the authority, after it received a silver award when they were handed out last year.

Mr Mercer said: “You have made a fantastic contribution to serving personnel veterans and their families. Showing the highest level of support for our veterans and reservists.”

In total this week, 127 companies and organisations picked up an award  with Cumbria County Council being only one of seven in the north of England.

The covenant is part of the Armed Forces Act, which was brought in back in 2011.
