The wedding plans for farming couple Amy Johnson and John Hodgson had to be revised due to the coronavirus lockdown, but the wedding went ahead on the original date.

Amy and John met on a night out in Carlisle in July 2017 and John proposed in August 2019. He took a day off work and took Amy out for the day in the Lakes. After a lovely lunch, a walk followed in the Cumbrian rain to the Bowder Stone and when they reached the top John asked Amy if she would marry him.

The planned stag and hen celebrations had to be cancelled due to the Covid 19 restrictions, however close friends organised a few drinks for Amy in a close friend’s garden and the stags partied outside at the farm.

The wedding service was held at Bowness on Solway Church with a rustic theme with a splash of pink. As no hymns were allowed there were additional readings beautifully read by the groom’s Uncle Thomas, the groom’s brother Joe and the bride’s friend Amy Raven. The organist played Fields of Gold during the signing of the register.

The bride wore an ivory tulle ball gown with lace bodice by White Rose complemented by a soft tulle veil and sparkly tiara from Blush Bridal, Whitehaven and her hair was done by the couple’s friend Ann-Marie Grainger.

John’s best man was schoolfriend John Dixon and his brothers Joe and Thomas Hodgson were ushers along with close friends Ashley Pigg and William Harrison.

The sons of the bride’s close friend were page boys and wore matching ties to the adults and black and white braces with blue or yellow wellies to keep in with the farming theme. They also had buttonholes handmade by I Heart Buttons.

Sadly, the maid of honour, Kelly McCoullough, was not able to attend the wedding as she couldn’t travel from Australia but kept an active role in the celebrations with many Zoom calls and photos.

Amy Raven, Emma Brough, Amie Millican, Claire Brough, Naomi Wake, Lucy Thomas and Katie Thelkeld were the bride’s Best Birds and colour co-ordinated their outfits. The flower girls were the daughters of the bride’s close friends and wore ivory dresses from the Flower Girl Boutique UK with matching shoes and socks and carried personalised wands also made by I Heart Buttons.

The best birds and maid of honour were given Joma Jewellery bracelets and the best man and ushers were given personalised pen knives made by Lakeland Laser Creations.

The wedding rings were from Jopsons, Carlisle and the bride wore pearl earrings from her close friend Emma Brough as her something borrowed. The flowers at church were arranged by the couple’s friends Christina Storey and Heather Pritchard who then brought them back to the farm for the reception. Emma Brough and Amy Raven also filled decanters with garden flowers to decorate the shed on the farm.

Transport was a 1958 Rolls Royce Cloud from Cumbria Classic Wedding Cars.

The planned reception wasn’t able to go ahead but Liz from Liz’s Country Kitchen provided canapés and fizz along with a special cocktail made by the bride’s friend Lucy Thomas for a small gathering back outside in the couple’s home farmyard. Table settings were milk bottles filled with garden flowers and home grown barley and wheat that had been used in church with ribbon from VV Rouleaux, Wigton.

The cake was supplied by Donna at Dream Cakes by Donna and was a two-tier carrot and chocolate layer cake decorated with cows and sheep with the couple made out of icing for the top along with a new Holland tractor. The female guests took home milk bottles filled with garden flowers as favours.

The couple enjoyed a Cumbrian honeymoon in Grange-over-Sands. The wedding photographer was Jill at Harrington’s.

The bride’s brother and his wife made the long journey up from Nottingham for the service

The bride is the daughter of Anthony and Susan Johnson of Nether Welton and the groom is the son of Allen and Sarah Hodgson, Drumburgh.
