A Workington man was spared jail after he was suspected of having driven a vehicle while very intoxicated during the Christmas period.

Christopher Martin Holmes, 30, of Oxford Street, appeared at the magistrates court in Workington on Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis when suspected of having been at the wheel.

Holmes was handed a 70-day jail sentence suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates said it had only been five years since a previous drink-driving offence.

They said the suspended jail term was justified due to the level of intoxication at the road side.

The incident happened on December 26 in Carlisle.

Holmes must also abide by a 10-week curfew and must attend appointments for up to 20 days as part of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

He was banned for 54 months and must pay £122 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
