The M6 was closed in both directions early this morning while police dealt with an incident.
The closure, at around 1am, was southbound between J41 to J40 and northbound at J40 where traffic was being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads.
A witness said there were tailbacks from Junction 41 to 40 as southbound was closed in the early hours at Skirsgill M6 J40. He added that the emergency services including police, fire and ambulances had attended and said that traffic was being diverted through Penrith.
A police spokesman has confirmed that the motorway was shut for a short time for the safety of the drivers on the M6 whilst the police dealt with an incident on the bridge.
The spokesman declined to provide any further information on the nature of the incident or those involved.
