Emergency services were scrambled to an address in Morton after the discovery of a dead body early on Thursday morning.
Just before 7am police were called to Stonegarth, Carlisle after it was reported a woman had been found dead.
The sudden death is not being treated as suspicious at the moment.
The body was of a woman in her thirties and a cause of death has not been issued.
An eyewitness reported a huge police presence in the area and a private ambulance took a body away.
Confirming the death, a spokesman for Cumbria police said: "We were called at 6.46am, June 4 by the North West Ambulance Service to a report of the sudden death of a woman at an address in Stonegarth, Carlisle.
"The death of the woman, in her thirties, is not being treated as suspicious at this time.
"A file will be prepared for the coroner."
